Moderate DDFT Injury
8 year-old horse with multiple tears within the DDFT
Patient: Miracle, 8-year-old horse, presented with recurrent distal limb swelling and lameness. Ultrasonography identified multiple small tears within the deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT). Initial management consisted of box rest with 10 minutes of controlled walking daily.
EqueStride rehabilitation: Commenced 19 July 2025, approximately 3–4 weeks following injury. At initial assessment there was mild swelling proximal to the annular ligament, but no pain on palpation or lameness at walk and no evidence of fetlock hyperextension.
Rehabilitation: Exercise was progressively advanced from controlled in-hand walking and small-paddock turnout to ridden walking, followed by gradual introduction of trot work and schooling with EqueStride support.
Ultrasonographic outcome: Follow-up examinations from October onwards demonstrated excellent ultrasonographic healing, with the DDFT lesion considered healed.
Clinical outcome: Miracle became sound at trot, including without EqueStride support, with no pain on palpation. Rehabilitation progressed to increasing turnout with gradual reduction of device support. By December 2025, the tendon remained ultrasonographically healed and the horse was transitioning towards normal turnout.
